How Highlands Ranch August Weekends Build to Aug. 22

For most of the summer, the Highlands Ranch calendar reads like a menu. Free concerts on Thursdays at Highland Heritage. Movies at the Backcountry on Saturday nights. Yoga in the park on Saturday mornings for its eighteenth year running. A resident can pick and choose without much cost to the week that follows.

August is different. August has an anchor, and once you see it, the rest of the month rearranges itself around a single date on the Civic Green lawn.

The Anchor: Saturday, August 22

The Summer Sunset Concert is not a new event, but the 2026 version is doing something the series has not done before. The show runs Saturday, August 22, 2026 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Civic Green Park at 9370 Ridgeline Blvd, with Denver 90s and 2000s cover band Ninety2K headlining, and admission is free. That part fits the usual pattern.

The change is what follows the encore. The drone show that comes after the concert is Stories in the Sky, part of a series of nearly 150 community drone shows lighting up Colorado's skies from the Eastern plains to the Western Slope throughout 2026. It is tied to the America 250 and Colorado 150 milestone, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and Colorado's 150th year of statehood. This is the milestone-year event for the community, and the crowd will match. Two practical notes worth planning around: dogs are not allowed at Civic Green Park for the August 22 Summer Sunset Concert, and food is picnic or food truck, in partnership with the Highlands Ranch Metro District, with a weather update line at 303-471-8888 for real-time cancellation info.

Saturday Mornings Are Not A Coincidence

Here is where the rest of August starts to line up. Free Yoga in the Park returns to Civic Green Park for its 18th year in 2026 on Saturday mornings from 8 to 9 a.m., and the August dates are Aug 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29. That last Saturday of the month is the fifth class, well past the point where regulars know the routine.

Read the dates back to back. The August 22 yoga class ends at 9 a.m. on the exact lawn where a drone show will take off roughly twelve hours later. The series is presented by the Highlands Ranch Metro District with HRCA Fitness in a fourth-year partnership, is beginner-geared with modifications, welcomes adults and ages 13+ with an adult, is free with no advance registration, and asks you to bring a mat, sunscreen, and water. For a household that lives within walking distance of Town Center, August 22 can start and end in the same park.

The Backcountry Hour

The middle of an August Saturday is the harder one to plan for, and this is where the neighborhood's most underused amenity earns its keep. The Backcountry Wilderness Area is an 8,200-acre conservation space in Highlands Ranch, with 26 miles of trails available to residents. The 8,200-acre HRCA-managed open space sits south of Highlands Ranch, and Base Camp at 6005 Ron King Trail hosts the public programming.

The programming worth knowing this summer:

  • Nature Night Out on Friday evenings at 5:30 p.m., continuing through the summer at Base Camp
  • Outdoor movies on Saturday nights at Base Camp, with the June lineup running The Goonies, The Wild Robot, and The Sandlot
  • Camp Backcountry week-long day camps for ages 7 through 17
  • Guided horseback trail rides through the conservation area, running Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend

The bigger news is not on any weekly calendar. A piece of American West history is coming home to the Backcountry Wilderness Area this summer, and for the first time in more than a century, bison will once again roam the grasslands of Highlands Ranch as part of a major conservation partnership between the Backcountry Wilderness Area Fund, Denver Mountain Parks, and the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance. If you have lived here for a while and stopped paying attention to the Backcountry because the trails felt familiar, the ecological picture is not the one you remember.

One access reminder that catches newer residents: the trails are for Highlands Ranch residents, with public access from behind the high school or along Grigs Road.

The Food Map Has Shifted

The last twelve months added two openings that change how a Highlands Ranch Saturday actually eats. Both matter more for residents than for visitors, because both fill gaps that used to require a drive.

The first is a breakfast option that did not exist here before. Egg Harbor Cafe, a Midwest breakfast and lunch restaurant, is now open in Highlands Ranch, with a menu built around cage-free eggs, premium fair-trade coffee, and an extensive gluten-free selection. The Highlands Ranch location is the brand's first in Colorado, with a second set to open in the Denver Tech Center at Belleview Station, and the address is 9579 S University Blvd, Lot 3B, with hours from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and no reservations. The space was previously home to HopsnDrops, a brewery that closed the prior spring. If you have been driving to south Denver for a serious weekend breakfast, you no longer need to.

The second is a charcuterie shop that solves the Aug 22 picnic problem before you know you have it. A specialty charcuterie concept is setting the table for its next Colorado debut, with Graze Craze under construction at 2670 East County Line Rd, Suite I in Highlands Ranch's Promenade Shopping Center and listed as "coming soon." Founded in 2020 by U.S. Air Force veteran Kerry Sylvester, the concept was built around demand for high-quality, ready-to-serve charcuterie, and local franchisee Sara Clay will oversee the Highlands Ranch location. A concert lawn with a blanket, a picnic, and a drone show is exactly the market they were built for.

What August 22 Actually Looks Like

If you plan the day around the anchor, a Highlands Ranch resident's Saturday reads something like this:

Time

Where

What

8:00 – 9:00 a.m.

Civic Green Park

Free Yoga in the Park, week five of the August series

9:30 – 11:00 a.m.

S. University Blvd

Breakfast at Egg Harbor before the 2 p.m. close

Late morning

Backcountry Base Camp

Trail loop or horseback ride out of Ron King Trail

Afternoon

Home

Rest, assemble the picnic, watch the weather line

5:30 p.m.

Civic Green lawn

Walk in, set the blanket, food trucks warming up

6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Civic Green Park

Ninety2K, then Stories in the Sky drone show

The reason this works is proximity. Civic Green Park hosts much of the action, including farmers markets, summer concerts, holiday events, and outdoor movie nights, and you can hear the music from the Town Center sidewalk, so families often walk over instead of driving. On August 22, the walk-in advantage is not minor. It is the difference between arriving relaxed and arriving late.

After The Drone Show, Look Ahead

The anchor date is not the last thing on the calendar, and locals who let their attention drift after August 22 miss a soft landing into fall. The Highlands Ranch Western Fest at the Mansion is Saturday, September 12, 2026 at the Highlands Ranch Mansion, and the Fall Craft Fair is the same day, Saturday, September 12, 2026 at the Eastridge Rec Center, with free admission. The Fête des Fables Gala 2026: Snow White follows on Friday, September 25, 2026 at the Highlands Ranch Mansion as a ticketed evening event.

For runners, the fall date to circle is the one that ties the Backcountry to the wider trail system. The 18th Annual Backcountry Wilderness Half Marathon returns to Highlands Ranch on Saturday, November 7, 2026 at 9:00 a.m., with 13.1 miles winding through the Douglas County East/West Trail and the Highlands Ranch Backcountry Wilderness Area on singletrack and hills.

The point of laying all of this out is not the itinerary. It is the shape of the month. Highlands Ranch has always had programming. What August 2026 actually shows is a community that has learned to concentrate a milestone year onto one lawn, one date, and one walk home, and to build the surrounding weekends as approach and recovery. The residents who know that are the ones already telling out-of-town family which flight to book.

If you are thinking about whether your current home makes that walk home easy, or whether a move to a different pocket of Highlands Ranch would put you closer to Civic Green, Town Center, or the Backcountry trailheads, Nate Forse knows the streets inside this map well. Let's connect.
